1. Print the PDF copy of the value list above. Circle 5 values that are already the most important to you, indicating which ones you feel you already achieve effectively and which ones you wish to pay particular attention to in refining. Include any additional values you identify not listed in the list.
2. Once your 5 top values are identified, describe 3 specific behaviors for each one that you can practice to live your life with intention, and indicate how you exercise them. Consider ways to further improve them.
Example:
Value: Friendship
1. Respect each others boundaries 2. Offer to help if I sense a need 3. Communicate frequently and clearly in person
3. For each of your top 5 values, identify if you already live the value, or if you are striving for it. List examples of how you are already living the value, and/or examples of how you could improve.
Example:
Value: Decisiveness
1. I am already living this because I'm able to make decisions with relative ease. For example,
-When business decisions need to be made, I gather the facts, analyze the situation, consider alternatives, and decide on the best course of action with usually good results. I realize not all decisions are perfect, but I don't procrastinate or look back. I communicate my decision to my staff and follow through until the desired result is achieved, making usually minor course corrections along the way as needed.
2. An area of decisiveness I could improve on is: -Extremely sudden and difficult situations in which I don't have a lot of information. One way to improve on this is by maintaining constant situational awareness of what our customers' needs are, educating myself in a broad array of upcoming technologies that could be integrated into our product suite, and having a good staff of employees who are also highly perceptive and continuously educated in their fields of expertise. When a sudden situation occurs, none of us are completely caught off guard or unable to propose solutions. I can then gather my staff, discuss the problem, and start gathering consensus. Accept the situation so as not to incite additonal stress that comes naturally with such events, which could affect decision making. Maintain positivity and confidence, letting my staff know I am completely confident in their ability, also. As the leader, I must make the final decision and hold everyone accountable for performance.
Caution: These examples were extracted from a participant in this exercise. In performing the exercises on your own, focus only on how YOU address the values you identify as your top ones.
